New Swift Dzire Automatic Sedan Reviewed

The entry level sedan Swift Dzire by Maruti Suzuki has been a leading car with 39% market share in its segment mainly due to its practical design, comfortable ride and adequate space making it an ideal family saloon. Taking this phenomenon a step ahead, Maruti Suzuki went on to launch a revised version of it on February 1, 2012. This revised version of the Dzire launched sports better dynamics compared to its outgoing model. The all-new second generation of the best-selling saloon Swift Dzire is a completely revamped car with refreshing look, tall stance and elegant feel to it. Surprisingly, even after being built on a brand new platform where it gets a longer wheelbase and better height as well as width, the sedan falls under the 4,000mm category reducing the excise duty on it. Well, thanks to its slapped boot for making it a two-and-a-half box sedan and keeping it under the 4-metre mark. Having known the drastic change in the boot, we are excited to take a look at the other major details of the new Swift Dzire. So, to review the new Dzire, we have chosen the automatic variant of the sedan.

Walk Around:

With 3995mm length, the new Dzire very subtly portray the Suzuki philosophy – “Small cars for future”. Although the car falls under 4-metre mark, it is taller and wider than the outgoing Dzire model and also boasts a longer wheelbase. The car is 145mm longer than the current generation Swift hatch. The front facia of the sedan looks like the new Maruti Swift, albeit it can be distinguished from the Swift due to its double layered perforated grille. However, in comparison to the outgoing Swift Dzire, the new Dzire has received plenty of changes in its aesthetics. The biggest change is a 100-litre less boot space than its predecessor leading to slapped boot or just a notch back. The boot lid has a light integrated spoiler to give a sporty look to the car. The redesigned tail lamps of the car are good looking. The rear doors of the car are bigger than the previous model. Some of the features on the outside include the turn indicators on the outside rear view mirrors, chrome integrated door handles and bigger tyres. Overall, the car is better built as compared to its predecessor but the only shock that it gave is the notch back.

 

Interior:

On the inside, the car is full of life with plenty of additional features compared to the outgoing Dzire. This new Dzire is claimed to boast at least 150 new features compared to the existing Dzire. The dual-tone colour theme of the car on the inside gives an upmarket feel to the whole cabin. The dash top of sedan is black and the rest is beige. The cover of the fabric seats is also redesigned. The mock wood inserts on the door panels as well as dash appear pleasant to the eyes giving out plusher feel to the cabin. The car sports features like keyless entry for mid and the high variants, leather trims, armrest for the rear passengers, music system, AUX-in and USB connectivity, some controls on the door handles and many more standard features. There is plenty of space for the front passengers, but the rear is a bit congested. The car also has 316-litre boot space for the luggage storage. Thus, the car boast plush and spacious interior with various standard features.

Performance and Ride:

The 4-speed automatic transmission of the sedan is mated with the 1.2-litre 4-cyinder VVT petrol engine capable of delivering output of 87PS at 6000rpm and peak torque of 114Nm at 4000rpm. The car can attain the top speed of 160kmph and sprint from 0-100kmph in less than 17 seconds. The car is implanted while moving around the corners and responds well in the city traffic. The automatic transmission and the engine are slick and they don’t feel sluggish at any point of time. The other new Dzire variants with manual gearbox come with the option of 1.2-litre petrol engine and 1.3-litre DDIS diesel engine, like the Swift hatchback.
The engine is more refined compared to its outgoing model. However, the performance of the car is a bit low on empty roads. The suspension of the car offer good performance and hardly any bump is passed through the cabin. Thus, the suspension isolates the cabin from the poor road with bumps and increases the body role of the car. MacPherson strut in the front and twist beam rear suspension are better absorbers of the bumps than its predecessor. The 165 x 80 R14 tyres are tall and help in improving the overall ride quality of the car.

The car offers mileage of about 11kmpl in the city traffic and 16kmpl on highways. Thus, the car is a good package in terms of mileage, performance and ride quality.

Verdict:

All in all, the all new Swift Dzire is truly an improved version of the outgoing model. In terms of refinement, the car scores good marks with better ride quality, elegant design and upmarket interior. The automatic version of the car, VXi variant is a great package at Rs. 6.54 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Apart from this, the other variants of the car are priced between Rs. 4.79 lakh and Rs. 7.09 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
