February 10, 2012: Volvo has launched its 2012 XC60 Crossover SUV in India. This crossover has a new D3 downsized diesel engine to power it. This diesel model crossover is expected to grab sufficient attention with the new reduced prices and create demand for itself in the Indian auto sector.

The 2012 Volvo XC60 Crossover SUV variants with the prices (ex-showroom, Delhi):

Variants Prices (in Rs.)
2012 Volvo XC60 – Base Variant 34.4 lakh
2012 Volvo XC60 – Top Variant 37.4 lakh

The 5-cylinder turbo diesel engine, D5 has been tweaked to develop the D3 diesel engine. D3 is a 3-cylinder diesel engine capable of producing maximum horsepower of 163PS and decent torque of 400Nm. The engine is mated with 6-speed auto transmission. The crossover is equipped with four wheel drive system. This new XC60 will vie with Audi Q5 and BMW X3, albeit the XC60 is priced very low even after being imported as completely built-up unit (CBU) in India with several taxes and levies implied on it.

However, the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 are locally assembled and come by completely knocked down unit (CKD) routes to India. Moreover, Volvo has only 7 sales and service centres in India and so the reach of the company is limited. Therefore, even with reduced prices, the company will be facing problems to sell their 2012 Volvo XC60 in India.
