February 4, 2012: Volkswagen has displayed its Modularer Querbaukasten (MQB) platform for the first time at its Head Quarter in Wolfsburg, Germany. This platform will form the common basis for the development of the next generation Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and SEAT models.

Volkswagen MQB Platform

This platform will be adopted by the Volkswagen factories as an integral part of the new production process throughout the world to produce the company’s new products line. This extravagantly flexible structure can be stretched from the Polo to the Passat size models, which is introduced for the first time in the auto industry. According to VW, the MQB strategy is a benchmark in the design and production of the future automobiles with the transverse-mounted engines. This will also lay the foundation of many vehicle components as standard across brands and vehicle classes.

Drive System in MQB

One of the key features of this platform is a common engine mounting system. As per this system, both the petrol and the diesel motors are mounted in the same way and at the same angle of inclination. This system further makes the production and assembly of the car as easy as it could have been. An 800cc diesel and a turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol unit are the two new modular ranges designed for the MQB.

The company is also planning to work on reducing the vehicle weights with the launch of the first MQB model series. The company will also introduce 20 innovations in the field of infotainment and safety, which till date were found in the higher vehicle segment.
