Honda to develop 7-seater to vie Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
Honda preps up to introduce a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga’s competitor in the Indian auto market by 2014. This new MPV from Honda will be based on Honda Jazz platform.
May 23, 2012: Honda is all set to launch a 7-seater vehicle to compete with Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Codenamed as 2NH, Honda will be launching this MPV by 2014. Well, the credit to Honda’s plan to launch a compact 7-seater MPV goes to Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga, which has been in demand since its launch.
The Swift hatchback based Ertiga is currently available after a waiting period of 6 months. The Ertiga was successfully launched and has received an overwhelming response from the vehicle buyers, mainly because there is no other competitor in this segment. In other words, the Ertiga is completely a new breed of vehicle by Maruti Suzuki. This new segment is very appealing to the economic buyers and thus, the vehicle is getting advantage of being the sole product in the segment.
To break this trend, Honda is looking forward to develop an MPV based on the Honda Jazz platform that can take on Maruti Suzuki Ertiga along with the other competitors like Mahindra Xylo and Toyota Innova. This new vehicle will be developed on the similar lines to that of Honda Freed, which is currently running on the streets of Malaysia. Available in Malaysia, Honda freed is a 7-seater. Thus, it can be considered that the company is planning to revamp the Freed to make it more suitable for the Indian buyers and Indian roads before successfully launching it.
Honda will be offering 2NH MPV in both petrol and diesel options. Honda will give more importance to diesel version as the Indian SUV and MPV buyers prefer diesel powered vehicles mainly due to high cost of petrol fuel. Moreover, the Honda vehicle buyers in the Asian subcontinent are also waiting for the Earth Dreams series of diesel engines by Honda to come soon in subcontinent. It is expected that the Earth Dreams series of diesel engines will be launched by the end of 2012 in Asian subcontinent.
Although Honda is looking to launch an Ertiga competitor, Maruti Suzuki India has declared that the sales of its Ertiga have not been as expected. The company has received over 40,000 bookings, but the sales during the months of April and May weren’t up to the mark. However, Maruti Suzuki expects the sales of the Ertiga to soar high during the festive season this year.
