January 31, 2012: Honda Motor is likely to launch its compact car Brio with the diesel engine in India this year, in order to gain back its market shares lost due to the costly petrol and increasing demand for the diesel vehicles.
The company is running a test of its newly developed diesel technology, the common rail i-DTEC, on the Brio that may get power from the 1.2-litre version of the engine. Moreover, the City sedan and the hatchback Jazz will also come as diesel variants with larger diesel engines later. Although the company had planned of introducing the diesel variants in 2013, the Honda seems to introduce them as early as possible India to regain its market shares.
“Honda is committed to bringing its diesel technology to key markets like India. And to ensure that Honda diesel is best suited to local conditions and offers optimum performance levels, Honda is conducting stringent tests at its R&D centres across several locations,” said a company’s spokesperson. The company is aiming to get back its market shares from its rivals Toyota and Volkswagen as their diesel cars are amongst the most selling cars in India.
